Tile Cleaning and Calcium Removal with Bead Blasting

If you own a pool, you’ve likely seen calcium deposits building up on the tile at the waterline, spillover, infinity edge, or waterfall. This is a common issue, particularly in areas with hard water (high calcium concentration). While these deposits aren't harmful to swimmers, they can take away from the beauty of your pool and backyard.

To restore your tile’s original shine and eliminate those calcium deposits, we use a guaranteed method called bead blasting.

What is Bead Blasting?

Bead blasting is a powerful surface restoration technique that uses a high-pressure air stream to propel small beads or particles to remove calcium or mineral buildup from pool tiles. Similar to sandblasting, it uses softer media like glass beads or salt particles, making it gentle enough to avoid damaging your tile.

Bead blasting typically takes 4–6 hours depending on pool size, calcium severity, and tile type. It’s safe, eco-friendly, and requires draining only a few inches of water (though full draining may be recommended if calcium hardness is very high). This innovative process is popular among pool owners wanting to maintain a pristine pool aesthetic.

What Causes Calcium to Form on Pool Tiles?

Calcium forms due to the natural chemistry of water, especially in hard water areas. Tap water contains calcium and other minerals. As pool water evaporates, calcium stays behind, and refilling the pool introduces more calcium, increasing its concentration.

Over time, calcium concentration surpasses water’s saturation point, causing excess calcium to precipitate and adhere to surfaces like pool tiles.

Can I Prevent Calcium Buildup?

Since calcium buildup is a natural chemical process, prevention is limited. Regular tile brushing won’t reduce calcium concentration or significantly slow buildup. The most effective prevention is refreshing your water every 2–3 years.

We offer two water refresh options depending on your budget and preferences:

Complete Drain and Refill: Fully drain the pool over several days, inspect and treat plaster if needed, then refill and balance water chemistry.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Filtration: Using a mobile multi-stage RO system, we filter your existing water on-site to remove nearly all minerals and impurities, resulting in pure, fresh water within 24 hours.

Bead Blasting Process

Step 1: Assessment and Quote

Our technician assesses your pool size, calcium severity, tile type, and any staining. We select appropriate blasting media (commonly salt or glass beads) and provide a detailed quote. Appointments are usually scheduled within days, depending on season.

Step 2: Drain 6–8 Inches and Setup

On appointment day, we drain enough water to access the tile line (usually 6–8 inches). Our technician wears protective gear and sets up equipment, loading media and protecting surrounding surfaces.

Step 3: Test and Blast

We first test blast a small area to fine-tune settings and ensure no tile damage. Then, we bead blast all calcium and mineral deposits tile by tile. The process takes 4–6 hours depending on calcium and pool size.

Step 4: Seal and Protect

After blasting, we apply a premium sealant to restore shine and protect tiles from chemicals and future calcium buildup, extending the time between cleanings.

Step 5: Final Inspection, Refill, and Cleanup

We inspect the work, refill the pool, vacuum beads (glass beads require manual removal; salt dissolves naturally), and clean the area before leaving.
